The French Council of Shopping Centers (CNCC) have announced the 2015 winner of the “Jeunes Espoirs” Awards, awarding one promising French shopping centre executive with a scholarship to attend the International Council of Shopping Centers’ (ICSC) Retail Property School in Frankfurt from 5-9 July 2015. The CNCC “Jeunes Espoirs” rewards shopping centre executives under 35 years old who accomplished outstanding work for one of CNCC’s member companies in the “communication and marketing” category. This year’s winner is Fanny Sauvage, Marketing Manager at Cora & Co.
Chair of the Jury and Vice-Chair of the European Shopping Centre Trust Bertrand Courtois-Suffit, said “It is very important to recognise young bright professionals and to give them the opportunity to improve their knowledge and network.” The European Shopping Centre Trust funds the scholarships, with travel and accommodation paid for by the CNCC.

ESCT Trustees Meeting
On Monday 20 April the ESCT trustees met with the ICSC Foundations President, Norris Eber and CEO Valerie Cammiso ( both at far end of the table) in London to discuss how the two charities might collaborate on educational programmes. There are some exciting possibilities and we are hoping that the Foundation will ratify ideas that could be implemented in 2016.
ICSC’s historic shopping centre archive preserved for posterity
Neil Mitchenall, co-founder of specialist retail property consultancy Lunson Mitchenall, and the current ESCT Enforcer and former Chairman of the Trust, has funded a digital library for the ICSC, protecting valuable shopping centre research and ensuring it can be accessed by all. http://www.icsc.org/research/the-neil-mitchenall-digital-library
Mitchenall hatched the idea of creating a digital library after prominent industry figure Charles Joye’s extensive research collection was donated to the European Shopping Centre Trust and housed in ICSC’s London HQ. This was joined by an equally vast Larry Smith research archive which bolstered the library, however it was only accessible by those who visited ICSC’s offices.
Keen to ensure that valuable studies could be shared as widely as possible, Mitchenall also volunteered to sponsor the project to scan 500,000 pages of reports, books and brochures on hundreds of European and UK shopping centres to form an accessible internet library.
Neil Mitchenall said. “We have a responsibility to preserve, protect and share our work and now we have the tools to do this online it would be remiss not to take advantage of them.”
Charles Joye, a major figure in Europe’s retail real estate scene, who was instrumental in founding, expanding and leading ICSC Europe sadly passed away on 20 March 2008. He was one of the founding Trustees of ESCT from 1999 up until he died. Mr. Joye created Retail and Development Services, a Genthod, Switzerland–based consulting firm in 1981. The firm specialized in retail site selection and shopping centre development, leasing and management. From 1973 to 1981, he was estate and expansion manager at Maus Frères, a Switzerland department store chain. Before that, he worked for the Larry Smith consultancy firm in Lausanne and Paris. Mr. Joye served as part-time secretary-general of ICSC Europe from 1992 to 1996, helping to turn the organization into a dynamic champion of the industry throughout Europe. He was chairman of the European Awards Committee for the first five years, launched The Solal Marketing Awards in 1993 and was chairman of that program until 1996. He was chairman of ICSC Europe from 1998 to 2001 and chairman of the 1982 and 1988 ICSC Annual Conference, in Paris and Geneva, respectively. Charles was presented with the ICSC Trustees Distinguished Service Award in 1991 and was only the 18th person globally to receive the award at that time. With an ICSC global membership of some 40.000 then, there had only been 120 of these recognitions in 30 years. The European shopping centre industry is indebted to Charles’s generosity of time, spirit, dedication and most importantly, friendship.
